Introduction of the Center

About the Center

Established in April 2011 with support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Center serves as a robust industry-government-academia collaboration center specializing in medical device development. Our primary aim is to continually innovate and produce medical devices that address evolving medical needs. Situated within Kyoto University Hospital and supported by the Organization for Research and Development of Advanced Medical Science, the Center benefits from a strategic location and strong institutional backup, facilitating the practical application of medical devices.

Leveraging the extensive resources of Kyoto University and Kyoto University Hospital, we actively foster collaboration with industry partners to drive the research and development of medical devices. Our commitment to open innovation facilitates close communication between university and industry researchers, creating an R&D environment optimized for clinical research.

Furthermore, the Center offers support tools tailored for clinical research specific to medical devices and funds grant programs for medical device R&D and human resource development using our own financial resources. By leveraging our internal funds, we endeavor to advance R&D initiatives and foster innovative outcomes, solidifying our position as a leading center for industry-academia collaboration in medical device development.

Towards Advancing Medical Device Innovation

Building a Platform for Matching Needs and Seeds

The field of medical devices is extensive, evolving significantly through cumulative improvements and refinements in clinical settings. Therefore, it is crucial to effectively coordinate research seeds from Kyoto University, clinical needs and infrastructure from Kyoto University Hospital, and technological seeds from industry, tailored to the characteristics of medical devices. This coordination is vital for the rapid development of medical devices.

Our research projects span various areas, including diagnostic devices, therapeutic devices, regenerative medicine technology, utilization of medical information, and human resource development. As of March 2021, we have undertaken 64 research projects, resulting in numerous reports of practical applications, including 6 approved and 4 certified medical devices. Additionally, we have facilitated the development of university-launched ventures and achieved various milestones such as database operations and human resource development programs.

Promoting an Ecosystem for Medical Device Development

The Center actively contributes to industry-academia collaborative research projects, thereby fostering a conducive R&D environment tailored to medical device development. With financial independence, we also prioritize the support of human resource development in medical device development through our budgeted research and development grant programs.

Through these sustained efforts, the Center has established a thriving ecosystem for medical device development, driving continuous innovation in the field.
